Las Salinas de Calpe is a salt lake that in the 19th and 20th centuries accounted for Calpe’s salt production. Salt and fishing were the key to the city’s economy. Salt was a necessity for preserving food, especially fish. At different times of the year you can see a large number of migratory birds, especially flamingos in the lake. There is a hiking trail that surrounds the lake.
